I am directed by the Comptroller and Auditor General to acknowledge the receipt of your letter dated the 20th ultimo, enclosing copies of a despatch from the Officer administering the Government of Hong Kong, and of Lord Knutsford's reply upon the subject of the proposed appointment of Mr. F. V. Ribeiro, Clerk in the Audit Office.
The Comptroller and Auditor General has also received a letter from the local Auditor upon the same subject, recommending the appointment to the post to be vacated, of Mr. Godfrey E. Taverner, son of the Acting Colonial Chaplain. Mr Nicolle states that Mr. Taverner is only 17½ years of age but that he is the most suitable candidate he has found at present and he suggests that, subject to three months probation,
